Cellular adaptations and responses to environmental stressors

Our research focuses on the physiological and cellular adaptations of animals to naturally-occurring environmental stressors such as hypoxia, hyperoxia, hydrogen sulfide and temperature. As comparative physiologists we try to understand the similarities and differences of these processes across a variety of animals, and as ecological physiologists we try to understand the similarities and differences of these processes within a variety of habitats. We focus primarily on marine and aquatic invertebrates, but we also use "model" systems, such as mammalian cell cultures, when they can help us get closer to the answers.
